TIPP CITY — Chaffee’s Brewhouse in Tipp City has expanded again to now offer lunch in addition to coffee and many other items, including customer favorites like homemade pop-tarts and pastries and a wide variety of cocktails, mocktails, and craft beers and wines.
Shawn Richards, who works at Chaffee’s Brewhouse along with his wife, Lisa, who owns the Brewhouse, said they could not have imagined when they opened in September 2020 where they would be today.
“We started it to be a local happy hour,” he said, noting they wanted it to be an extension of Harrison’s and Coldwater Cafe, both in Tipp City. “We wanted it to be a waiting room” (for those waiting on a table at those locations).
Shawn said the plan was to offer a before or after dinner drink. But three expansions later, they are allowing their customers to drive their direction. After the initial focus, the Brewhouse added coffees, lattes and pastries after a local coffee shop closed. They feature Farm House Bakery homemade pastries from Troy that includes what Shawn describes as “gourmet pop-tarts,” with favorites being the brown sugar and mixed berry flavors. In addition to morning buns, the Brewhouse offers vegan and gluten-free chocolate banana muffins, among other offerings.
The Brewhouse also offers Americano espresso, cappuccino, chai tea, drip coffee, espressos, frappuccino, hot chocolate, lattes and plant-based refreshers, including, among others, ocean water, blue raspberry and coconut and bubbly strawberry soda.
“People started asking for lunch service,” Shawn explained. “With the demand for other offerings, we put in a kitchen.”
Lunch, which is now being served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be expanded for summer hours. Among their features for lunch guests are panini, including Italian and turkey panini. They are also offering ham and Swiss and a veggie sandwich. There are gluten-free options available for all of their sandwiches, which are prepared on a press, but are also offered cold.
Shawn noted that Chaffee’s uses Boar Head meats for their sandwiches and they are offering a “build your own option” for those who like to individualize their sandwich. Some of the toppings for sandwiches include tomato, lettuce, avocado and cucumber.
“We’ll be offering a sandwich of the week as a specialty,” he said.
They serve Mumford’s potato chips, of Urbana, along with a pickle as sides for the sandwich of the week.
There is a half sandwich/half soup option, and Shawn said there is currently a different soup each week to see what customers like. Right now, those include chicken and dumpling, loaded potato and tomato basil soups. In the summer, they plan to offer a half sandwich/half salad option.
“We wanted to start out slow (and) get our staff trained,” he said.
In a twist to the typical food establishment, Shawn said customers can enjoy food from other restaurants at their establishment, “You can bring food from other places.”
They do request customers to purchase drinks or other items from their menu while enjoying the items they bring with them.
Chaffee’s features a beer hall with a communal table where customers can enjoy spending time together, as well as the wine vault, which a separate room with lower lighting. The bar at Chaffee’s Brewhouse was built featuring walnut from a tree at their family farm.
Additionally, Chaffee’s has expanded outdoor seating where customers can enjoy what Shawn described as some of their signature drinks including a house Cosmo on tap or a rye old fashioned or Joe’s Manhattan. They also offer 18 different beers. Shawn noted they “like to showcase Ohio breweries.” They offer specialty cocktails that are “rotated through the seasons” and offer mocktails and non-alcoholic drinks for those who do not drink alcohol.
Chaffee’s offers “Wind Down Wednesdays,” where customers can drop by for a $5 glass of wine.
Chaffee’s Brewhouse is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chaffee’s Brewhouse does not sell any alcohol on Sundays.
